Diapers: Cloth Vs. Disposable
The most preferred way to diaper a baby is with the disposable ones. They are more convenient and once they are used, just toss in the garbage (or diaper pail) and grab a fresh diaper. There’s become more controvery though, from moms who want to “be green” and help the environment whenever their baby dirties a diaper. Certain aspects of going for cloth are a great idea, but there are pros and cons, which is why I put together the following list.
Cloth diapers are reusable, and don’t end up in the landfills like disposable ones do. In essence, they are more eco friendly.
Since they’re reusable, you don’t have to keep purchasing diapers every week or so.
Many moms consider cloth diapers to be much cuter than disposable diapers.
Although it can take some getting used to, once you get the hang of it (according to many moms) cloth diapers are easier to use.
You don’t have to feel bad if the diapers you change are barely soiled, because you can just throw them in the wash rather than the garbage.
Cloth diapers can later be re-sold – disposable ones, obviously, cannot.
Cloth diapers require you to do laundry more frequently which in turn can have direct bearing on your water and electric bills. This can make the cost difference shift over to what it would cost if you used disposable ones. In such cases, it’s best to have an energy efficient washer and dryer (i.e. Energy Star).
Depending on what types of cloth diapers you choose for your baby, and where you purchase them, it can actually be expensive to use cloth diapers rather than disposable ones.
They are not normally as convenient as disposable ones, especially while out and about or if you travel. When away from home and having to change your baby’s diaper, using a cloth diaper can leave you carrying a bad odor in your bag, and can be very embarassing.
They can take up more space in the diaper bag.
*Reducing thousands of diapers in landfill waste, using cloth diapers instead of disposable diapers are definitely an eco friendly alternative. A favorite is FuzziBunz, and with their (organic) cloth diaper products only about 15 diapers are needed for a baby’s entire journey of diaper wearing. They are adjustable, which is great.
